Is Philadelphia a bad city to live in as a college student?

I am thinking about going to Pennsylvania for my MA in Anthropology and I have been looking at the University of Pennsylvania. So far I like the idea but I have heard mixed ideas about Philadelphia's crime rate. I am just trying look at all my options before I decide to visit Philly and see if the University is suitable for me? I go to a university in NH, I am getting my BA in History and American Studies. Do you have any other suggestions?
