How do you use triads to form a melody?

I am trying to learn how to make a melody using triads. If your song you want to create follows a key signature of F major for example. How would I go about doing this? Would the chord sequence be able to follow this type of pattern.. FAD, GBbD, ADF.. And so on? Am I allowed to change the root note like that but still remain within the scale?
